I am an expert in creating impeccable website content, having cut my teeth in the world of print media for four years in the early 1990s, before moving into website publishing in 1998. Here are some examples of my writing work:
-
Magazine Editing: I learned my trade in the world of print media, where I spent five years working in magazine journalism. For two of those years I edited a national computer magazine, Acorn User, which remained the leader in its market during my tenure. I also spent a year as editor of RISC User, where I did every job from commissioning content and designing flatplans, to laying out the magazine and liasing with the printers. The discipline I learned in print media is invaluable when working in new media.
-
Web's Favourite Travel Writer: A good example of my quality-led approach to content generation can be found in my collection of personal websites. These five sites – particularly my travel writing site – combine standards-compliant web design with a huge amount of content, all of which is impeccably edited. Between them, my personal sites collect together over 800 pages of content and 2500 captioned photographs, and this combination of quantity and quality has earned my a large number of compliments from visitors. The success of the site in Google has earned me the moniker of the Web's Favourite Travel Writer; try typing 'travel writer' into Google to see what I mean.
-
h2g2: I also wrote a number of articles while editor of h2g2, including a well-respected series of musical entries on artists like Nick Drake, Neil Finn, Grant Lee Buffalo and The Lightning Seeds.
-
DNA Hub: Following on from h2g2, I set up the DNA Hub and wrote most of the initial content, describing how to run successful online communities and explaining the DNA project to the public.
-
Syndication: My writing and photography has been syndicated in over 20 publications over the last four years, from other travel websites to French children's books, and interest in reusing my content remains strong.
In summary, it doesn't matter how good your technical skills are if you don't know how to create decent content in the first place, and I am well versed in all aspects of new media publishing, from content creation to website publishing.
