Really enjoyed your inspirational book.
I have done many long distance walks over the years and am planning to do the end to end next year to celebrate my 70th birthday!
One last big walk??(Maybe for charity)
Best wishes for the future.

Hi jon.

Thanks very much - I'm delighted you like the book. 😀

You'll know, then, that Barry, whom I kept bumping into, did his LEJOG at the age of 69 back in 2003. Well, he only went and did JOGLE back in 2011, which is amazing. So it might not be your last big walk after all!

Good luck, and if you want to ask any questions about planning and so on, feel free to post here. I'm always happy to help.

Best wishes,

Mark

Thanks for your reply.
The planning is well in hand,I have my proposed route more or less sorted, just needs fine tuning, short cuts, alternative routes, etc.(I have 12 months to probably change it all!)
Having done the Pennine Way back in 1969,I,like yourself have no wish to endure a repeat visit.
After reading the book, the Alternative Pennine Way seems reasonable but who knows?
I may also take a route through the middle of Scotland, not wishing to do the WHW or GGW again.
But plan for both and decide later.
(The only big uncertainty is deciding whether to do LEJOG or JOGLE!!
Thanks for listening.

Hi Jon.

I can certainly sympathise - if I did the walk again, I'd skip the Pennine Way (possibly going via the Lake District instead), and I'd head straight north from Edinburgh to Inverness, as I hear good things about that part of the world. I'd also ditch the Cotswold Way and head for the mouth of the Severn instead, as I loved that part... but the great thing about planning your own route is that *you* get to choose, of course!

As for LEJOG or JOGLE, those who've done both ways seem to enjoy them equally, so you can't go wrong, really. You've got plenty of time to decide... 😀

Hi Mark.
Started my LEJOG at the beginning of May.
Unfortunately,in Devon the combination of narrow country lane and(speedy)car resulted in a leg injury, necessitating a return home,a minor knee operation and recuperation.
I am hoping to be fit enough to resume the walk in September but if not it looks like a postponement until next year.
Am both annoyed and disappointed but thats life isn`t it?
Regards,Jon.

Hi Mark, hope you are well. Just a message for Jon, Thats real bad luck mate. Hope you recover ok and manage to start the walk again and complete it. I did End to End in 2006 and it's a great event. Keep positive and I,m sure you'll crack it. Cheers, JRT.

Hi Jon. And John. 😀

I'd like to echo what John said - bad luck Jon. Those narrow lanes are pretty scary on foot, but the only alternative for walkers through Cornwall is to take the coastal path, and that's a killer for people with dodgy knees like me!

I hope you make a speedy recovery, and good luck for September... or next year. Don't rush it; the walk won't be going anywhere. 😀

All the best,

Mark

Hi Mark.
Following further knee surgery in September, the doc now informs me I have permanent knee damage and a walk of this distance and duration is neither feasible or recommended.
Never one to take advice,I am planning on restarting my walk in April,as my day walks seem ok.
In kindness to my knee however,I have considerably reduced my pack weight by not camping and carrying only what is nescessary.
I have also modified my route to shorten and "flatten" it if required.
So I will give it a go and hope all goes well.
Regards,Jon

Hi Jon.

Well, all I can say is good luck! I have to say that when I ditched all the weight on my walk after I injured my ankle (only mildly in comparison, I should add!), I really started to enjoy the walk more. Carrying all that camping equipment just wasn't for me, and there's no way I'd have managed to get to the other end if I'd carried on camping. And taking out the hills... well, that should help, too, as some of them seem to go on forever. 😲

Obviously, my advice would be to take it as gently as you can, but I don't need to tell you that. Also, I found walking poles to be really useful - my knees aren't that strong, and they really helped to reduce the strain (along with knee supports). I wouldn't do a long walk without them now, so if you haven't already considered them, I highly recommend you give them a go.

Good luck with all the planning and training, and do let me know how you get on. It's a *real* challenge now!

All the best,

Mark

Hi Jon,

Don't know if your still picking up these replies. Am planning on LEJOG in the future once I've managed to save up enough time up from work. Keep me updated with plans and could meet up and walk with you for a day, if you lke any company. Good luck and hope knees hold up for you.
