Subject: Welcome to my new-look Guestbook!

Hi there.

My Guestbook is now running on a much friendlier system, powered by the wonderful phpBB. I can now reply to your messages, so if you're interested in getting a response, do pop back a day or two after you post to see if I've had time to reply. I'll try to respond to everyone within a few days, as long as I'm not hacking my way through a rainforest at the time... 😀

I look forward to hearing from you, and I hope you enjoy your visit.

Best wishes,

Mark

I can hardly believe what a positive, cheerful guy you are! I've looked at your site a few times, I love the pieces you write, and am always drawn to the guestbook, where I'm amazed by the time and energy you put into politely, kindly and considerately answering all the readers' comments - even the rudest. But something does puzzle me: why do you do it? You'll drive yourself crazy ...
Until then, all best wishes, Andrew Sanger
(also a travel writer, tho' in my case, it IS the day job).

Hi Andrew.

Why do I do it? Good question! I suppose I answer people's questions because doing so makes me happy - most messages in my Guestbook are pretty complimentary about my stuff, and it's never a chore to reply to compliments. 😀 As for those who don't like what I do, I've found that explaining my angle on things can do wonders - I've converted a few harsh critics by posting detailed replies, and that makes it worth the effort. Like most writers, I like my writing to be liked!

I've also got a background in running online communities, and I know how satisfying it is to get a reply when you've taken the time to post. I figure it's only polite to reply when people have spent the time and effort writing to me. I like to make people feel good, whether it's through writing travel articles that make me laugh (and thereby, hopefully, making others laugh) or by replying to visitors' questions. It helps me to remain positive and cheerful in my real life, and that's a really good thing. This website is my hobby, and hobbies are always more fulfilling if they're upbeat.

As for driving me crazy, I went that way a long time ago... 😉

Thanks for posting, Andrew, and thanks for being so kind about my site. I'm really glad you like it.

Best wishes,

Mark
